I haven't been able to get any further with the Ginger Perkins strips in the last fortnight after getting the first page done thanks to having slipped another disc!!
It's starting to ease up, but now my glasses (which I need to get a new pair anyway) have gone missing! So it might be a bit longer before I can get any work done. <sigh!>

By way of explanation btw thanks to my MS I've 2 knackered legs, a knackered left arm & eye, so getting out & about (never mind making it up the stairs!) these days is a bit limited! :S

I've redesigned the 'Ginger Perkins' characters so the 'look' can be a bit more dynamic. I'll have to start getting on with the stories I wrote a while back.

I used the proportions of the villagers in the fantasy strip characters to do up a couple of characters in those proportions just to have another wee style handy.

New style

Here's a couple of caricatures I did as part of the Weekly Art Blog, the theme was doing stuff in another style than your own & I wanted to do a kinda paper cut-out look. To be honest, my first caricature of Leonard Brezhnev was pretty much a copy of a caricature by Edward Valtman.

I didn't intentionally set out to be so close, I was a bit taken by trying to do a paper-cut style I forgot to stop at using the proportions & it was only after it was pointed out to me I actually stood back & thought 'oh crap!'

Anyway, I really enjoyed the style & did these other two shortly after (not copied from anything other than a couple of reference photos).

Stilton on Rye

A couple of years ago I had the idea to do a wee strip based on the idea of how some of the towns in Trumptonshire would look now after the last 30 years of social change. I came up with the town of 'Stilton on Rye', a town close to the old industrial city of Renchester.

The idea was to have a tongue in cheek look at how such a naive 60's outlook would've been transformed, but the art style just wasn't working, so it got chucked in one of my old folio cases.

Having just spent the day watching a 'Postman Pat' DVD with the wee man I realised I just wasn't looking properly. The characters all have subtley different features & stances. The buildings are resin cast or styrene cut with perspex windows (of course it's now all CGI'd on software like 3D Max, but based on the old models), trees are resin cast constructed from basic forms. It also reminded me of how they used blue painted rollers covered in cellophane, turning, to give the impression of sea water.

It's was all brilliant stuff, so I'm going to have another go at some character visuals. Succeed or fail, I'll post them up for a nosey. :)

Character preparations

One of the other things I never really paid much thought to, at least with comic or multiple story pictures was a pre-planned proportional drawing of the characters (bizarrely naive I know!), but I did do this with the last wee set of characters I designed for a tale (which, as per usual is lying unused in an old folio case). Here's a couple of the sheets (notice, I used a circle template to proportion them to make it easy to reproduce) :-

Can I recommend 'Color and Light:A Guide for the Realistic Painter' by James Gurney as without doubt the most informative & generous book I have ever read by an artist.

Eyes Open

I've recently realised just how 'going through the motions' I'd become over the last couple of years. In the last few weeks I've actively tried to re-engage a proper mentality, actively looking & thinking about my artwork again.

I'm not in the position to get any painting done thanks to a destructive toddler and no closed off space to work, but I can get some drawing done when he goes to bed, & do some work on the computer. I've bought a few books to get me thinking about colour, composition, visual narrative properly again and this'll just be an occassional update of whether it's working out or not, along with some images.
